The prospect of a shift in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s position on tactical nuclear weapons in Europe in 2010 was the subject of a BASIC event held at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.
Britain\’s “Mick Jagger election,” at which nobody got any satisfaction, was the topic of this joint BASIC event with the Center for Transatlantic Relations. The event took place at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, EU Center of Excellence in Washington, DC.
Brian Eno, rock musician and artist, invited an eclectic collection of fellow musicians, artists, business people, senior politicians, officials, philanthropists, actors and writers to his London studio on the evening of February 1st to broaden support for nuclear disarmament.
Joint New America Foundation – BASIC meeting in Washington, DC.
This private roundtable discussion was held at the New America Foundation\’s office and involved about 25 participants, including representatives from NATO-member embassies.
Jan Lodal (recent President of the Atlantic Council of the United States and a former senior Defense Department and White House official) and Arnold Kanter (former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs) started off the meeting with brief presentations.
During their All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and BASIC organized-visit to Washington, DC, the Rt. Hon. Des Browne, MP (Labour), Dr. David Lidington, MP (Conservative), Tony Lloyd, MP (Labour), and Lord Hannay of Chiswick (Crossbench), shared their views on the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and the prospects for success on nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation at this joint Carnegie Endowment for International Peace-BASIC event.
In partnership with the New America Foundation (NAF), BASIC hosted a breakfast discussion on NATO\’s nuclear posture within the context of the Strategic Concept review.
The meeting was held at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC with around 30 participants – including representatives from NATO-member embassies and U.S. government offices.
