Video: NPT Monitor Launch: A Guided Walkthrough & Panel Discussion

On 3 September 2026, BASIC’s Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Programme (NPD) hosted a live webinar to mark the launch of the NPT Monitor, our free tool tracking how States are implementing their commitments and obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Following a live walkthrough of the tool, an expert panel discussed where it fits in the review process. Thomas Markram traced the push for accountability back to the 1995 Review and Extension Conference, Leonardo Bandarra set out its value for researchers, and Emmanuelle Maître pointed to its role in settling what “past commitments” actually mean and in giving the peaceful uses pillar equal weight. 

The discussion was followed by an audience Q&A covering which states the Monitor might expand to next, how often the data will be updated, and whether the tool can help push states towards formal scrutiny of their national reports.
