Video: The Search for Nuclear Justice

EVN APLN 1 e1714573569944

On 17th April, BASIC’s Emerging Voices Network (EVN) and the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network (APLN) co-hosted ‘The Search for Nuclear Justice’ where members from both networks with expertise on the subject were brought together to provide their insights on the issue of nuclear justice.

Fundamental questions about nuclear justice—what is nuclear justice, why is nuclear justice important—are being raised with increasing urgency in the global nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament discourse. The entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) has also been instrumental in shedding much-needed light on the role of international law and the international community in addressing issues such as victim assistance and environmental remediation for all those affected by past nuclear tests and uses. This webinar explored policy priorities and recommendations that can urgently push for realising nuclear justice, especially concerning victim assistance and environmental remediation.

Speakers include:

  • Ruairí Devereaux-Heddon, Independent researcher specialising in international law and humanitarian disarmament
  • Anaïs Maurer, Assistant Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Rutgers University
  • Monalisa Hazarika, UN Youth Champion for Disarmament
  • Ian Fleming Zhou, PhD candidate at the University of Pretoria
  • Ekaterina Lapanovich, Senior Lecturer at Ural Federal University
