“Scoping British Nuclear Weapons Harms”, generously funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, is a project that investigates harms associated with the United Kingdom’s nuclear arsenal. As part of this work, we are developing a Nuclear Weapon Harm Reduction Framework, a tool designed to identify different kinds of “nuclear harms” across the lifecycle of a nuclear weapon, and in turn develop specific methods for harm reduction in order to prevent, mitigate, or remediate each of these harms.
As part of the development of this tool, we have used the UK as a first case study. This work intends to facilitate an increase in public awareness of UK nuclear weapons harms, encourage democratic participation in deliberation over the UK’s nuclear weapons programme, and influence Government and Parliamentary attention and response to nuclear weapons harms.
A one-pager about the project is available here.
This work is part of BASIC’s broader work on Nuclear Harms, which has included an EVN policy cycle on “Nuclear Harm Reduction”. More information can be found here.
