On 15th May, BASIC Co-Director Sebastian Brixey-Williams was invited to speak at the OxPeace 2021 Conference ’Peace in the Nuclear Era: threats, treaties and public understanding.’
Sebastian presented a responsibilities-based approach to the reduction of strategic risks, highlighting the opportunities for dialogue created by the introduction of ‘responsibility talk’ to diplomatic discussions on cyberspace, space and nuclear weapons.
The presentation focused on the framework developed in the recently published report Nuclear Responsibilities: A New Approach for Thinking and Talking about Nuclear Weapons, proposing a shift in the incumbent conversation on nuclear weapons. By moving from a conversation focused on blame and suspicion, towards one grounded in a responsibilities-based approach, the opportunities for the development of mutual trust and strategic risk reduction open up significantly.
The recording of the presentation is available to view below and on the University of Oxford Podcast website here.
