Brief: Defining Success at the First Review Conference: Advancing Articles 6 and 7 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

BASIC is pleased to publish a new policy brief by Dr Laura Rose Brown as part of our project examining the implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) ahead of the treaty’s First Review Conference, scheduled to take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in late 2026.

The policy brief summarises the principal findings and recommendations for policymakers and practitioners of the full, final project reportPreparing for the First Review Conference of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons: An Analysis of the TPNW’s Implementation and Potential for Impact, which argues that the First Review Conference will play a formative role in shaping understandings of accountability, implementation, and success under the treaty. Both the report and the policy brief warn against approaches that prioritise procedural outcomes over tangible impact and offer a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening implementation frameworks and ensuring meaningful participation of affected communities.
