BASIC is Seeking Two New Members to Join Board of Trustees

BASIC is seeking two new trustees:

  • An expert in fundraising, philanthropy, and revenue generation.
  • A lawyer or legal expert with professional knowledge and experience of UK charity law.

BASIC is an independent think tank working to safeguard humanity and Earth’s ecosystem from nuclear weapons risks and interrelated security threats, for generations to come. Founded in 1987, we have 35 years’ experience of convening meaningful dialogues across complex political divides, and a reputation for generating innovative, high-quality research and policy advice.

Our role is to draw together different perspectives within the nuclear weapons/security debate, where we can push the boundaries of policy discussions. We are independent and defend our freedom of speech, receive no core funding from any state, and our project work is funded transparently. As a fast paced, inclusive, and rewarding environment in which to work, we have experienced significant growth since 2017, and our intention is to continue this growth trajectory.

As part of the senior management team, we are seeking two individuals with experience in philanthropy or charity law, and a strong commitment to BASIC’s mission and vision, to join our Board of Trustees. BASIC’s Board comprises a number of experts in international nuclear policy and strategy. We are looking to strengthen its membership, by further building the group of trustees with expertise in managing organisations and charity governance.

The role:

The board meets approximately 4 times a year, exclusively virtually over the past three years. Current board members reside in the UK, the US, Austria, and Ireland, so in-person attendance at board meetings is not required.

In total, individual board members spend between 4 hours to two days per quarter on average fulfilling trustee responsibilities. There may be additional ad-hoc meetings to address any short-term critical issues that arise, and opportunities to take on additional roles and responsibilities of governance if you are interested and have available time.

Your fundraising experience will help ensure BASIC has the resources needed to continue its work. You will advise the Executive Director and the board on appropriate fundraising strategies. See our Funders page for more information. Your legal experience will help ensure that BASIC operates in compliance with UK law and adopts best practices.

BASIC is working with Reach Volunteering, to recruit for these positions. Further details, including the application process, can be found on their website here.

BASIC is a champion of equity, diversity and inclusion in the nuclear policy field. We are committed to equal opportunity employment, regardless of race, colour, ancestry, religion, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, or disability. We are happy to work with candidates to accommodate their disability needs.
