Top diplomatic editor to head BASIC team in Washington

Anne Penketh has covered diplomatic and disarmament issues in the US, nuclear weapon states, Iran and North Korea

BASIC is pleased to announce that Anne Penketh, long-time Diplomatic Editor at The Independent in London, will be leading BASIC\’s Washington team working to promote nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Anne is an international journalist who has covered diplomatic and disarmament issues for many years with first hand, on-the-ground experience of the US, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Paul Ingram, Executive Director of BASIC, says:

Experts shared their views on what the next U.S. administration should do to manage the urgent threat from nuclear weapons and how it could take advantage of transatlantic relationships. The event was co-sponsored by BASIC and Women in International Security, at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC.

Meeting with a delegation from the Defence Committee of the WEU Assembly – The European Security and Defence Assembly

On June 17, 2008, BASIC hosted a meeting with delegation members from the Defence Committee of the Assembly of the Western European Union – The European Security and Defence Assembly at the Washington, D.C. Home of Stewart R. Mott.

A World Without Nuclear Weapons: The International Dimension

BASIC joined with the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC to jointly sponsor a debrief on the recent meeting on nuclear disarmament in Oslo, Norway.

Ambassadors Max Kampelman and James Goodby (U.S.-ret.) and Dr. George Perkovich discussed the means of revitalizing the international disarmament movement.
