NATO’s 360-degree approach to deterrence and collective defence: over-stretched and under-powered?

In seeking to meet myriad external challenges and maintain internal cohesion at a time when core values are fracturing, is NATO over-stretched and under-powered? In advance of the upcoming NATO Summit in Brussels on 11-12 July, this workshop will examine these trends in transatlantic security, nuclear weapons proliferation and the attitudes and assumptions underlying current NATO policy
BASIC, ICCS Birmingham, NATO Watch and King’s College London organized a one-day civil society Shadow NATO Summit in July 2018.
BASIC, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the Elliott School of International Affairs, NATO Watch, and Strategy International organized a two-day civil society Shadow NATO Summit in May 2012 with the support of the Marmot Trust, NATO Public Diplomacy Division, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Numerous policy experts and officials attended these events organized around the two NATO summits in 2009 and 2010. They were organized by NATO Watch, BASIC, Bertelsmann Stiftung and ISIS-Europe, and supported by the Marmot Charitable Trust.
Heads of State issued A Declaration on Alliance Security at the NATO 60th Anniversary Strasbourg / Kehl Summit. A few days prior to this a Citizens Declaration of Alliance Security was launched at a Shadow NATO Summit organised by BASIC, Bertelsmann Stiftung, ISIS Europe and NATO Watch.
