Hans Blix opens first day of nuclear non-proliferation conference in Qatar

Hans Blix delivered the keynote address for a BASIC conference on Nuclear Non-Proliferation in the Gulf. The former chief U.N. weapons inspector for Iraq and chair of the WMD Commission warned of the dangers from nuclear weapons and material, and called for greater inter-governmental cooperation and transparency.

Participants in the conference then broke off into separate panel events, including discussions on nuclear power and the run up to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference in 2015.

The event will continue through March 22, and will address issues around Iran’s nuclear program and a WMD-Free Zone in the Middle East.

The BASIC conference was being held at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, with support from the UKFCO and Qatar.
