On Wednesday, 26th February 2025, Dr. Kazuko Hikawa joined BASIC’s Emerging Voices Network (EVN) to deliver an Expert Masterclass on ‘Introduction to the NPT and the Challenges it Faces’. A recording of the event is now publicly available, and should be of interest to all those working in or studying multilateral nuclear affairs.
In this NPT Masterclass, Dr. Hikawa provides an overview of the origins and brief history of the NPT, as well as an insight into the key components of the NPT Review Process. She also raises questions about the challenges facing the NPT for further discussion with EVN members.
After the presentation, Dr. Kazuko Hikawa took questions from the EVN members in attendance.The event was chaired by Dave Cullen, the Programme Manager of the Emerging Voice Network at BASIC.

Dr. Hikawa works at Nagasaki University in Japan, where she serves as the vice director and professor at the Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition. She is also a professor at the Research Center for Global Risk and is also the Deputy Director of the centre. She is an Adjunct Fellow of the Japan Institute of International Affairs and Co-Founder of World New Prosperity.
