The UK should remain a nuclear weapons state for the next 15-20 years. However, Trident like-for-like renewal is too costly and sophisticated. Instead the UK should replicate the US deployment of nuclear weapons on hunter killer submarines.

If a non-nuclear world is to emerge in the next 50 years then countries like the UK, with a minimal deterrent, should be charting a course that makes it possible to envisage abolition of nuclear weapons. It would be very damaging to the concept of a world free from nuclear weapons if the UK was to embark on a weapon that is designed to be still operating in 50 years time.
