On Monday 1st May 2025 at 10am, BASIC’s Emerging Voices Network (EVN) and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) are hosting a in-person joint side event, ‘Humanitarian Impacts and the NPT: Reflections Toward the 2026 Review Conference‘, at the 2025 Preparatory Committee meeting for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) at United Nations Headquarters, Conference Room A.
Chaired by Molly McGinty (IPPNW) and Dave Cullen (BASIC), this side event will discuss the ongoing relevance of the humanitarian and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons to the NPT as we approach the final year of the 2026 Review Cycle.
Drawing on previous work within the treaty, and elsewhere, including the 2024 UNGA Resolution entitled “Nuclear war effects and scientific research”, the panel will consider the prospects for a greater humanitarian focus within the NPT in the current political climate.
