Future Nuclear Security in a Rapidly Evolving World

Wednesday, May 25, 2016 (All day)

BASIC and N Square Collaborative are co-hosting a unique open-ended workshop in San Francisco: an exploration of issues surrounding nuclear security, nuclear deterrence and international governance with a diverse group of participants. This is the concluding part of a project funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York looking at methods of reframing nuclear security issues in holistic, systems perspectives.

The workshop will involve around 25-30 participants including some with responsibilities in this area and others outside with a keen interest. We will be taking a holistic systems approach, considering the broader strategic environment and the psychological drivers that impact upon people’s engagement in the with nuclear issues. The workshop will also consider various future scenarios that capture the dangers and opportunities we face with changing international dynamics, social movements, and emerging technologies and strategies that attempt to manage these shifts.

This workshop will inform the relevant framing that can help encourage people to take nuclear weapons issues seriously, and to think about how our approaches to nuclear security can be more relevant to other concerns that drive policy and social attitudes. We hope that participants will leave with a renewed commitment to effective strategies when thinking about these issues and their future direction.

This workshop is invitation only.
