The issue of the replacement of Trident is already receiving more attention due to speculation about the general election result and it will, anyway, be an issue demanding attention early on in the new government in the context of continuing budgetary pressures and ongoing international strategic priorities. This briefing will lay out the range of options regarding the decision currently scheduled for 2016 for any follow-on nuclear weapon system for the UK including:

  • Going ahead with like-for-like renewal of the submarine fleet in 2016

Hosted in collaboration with the Center of Information and Arabian-Russian Studies (CIARS), this workshop of officials and international and regional experts in the field of nuclear diplomacy and strategic security discussed the strategic balance in the region, the evolution of deterrence relationships, the development of non- proliferation commitments and credible assurances surrounding them.

How will we achieve progress on the long and tortuous road of eliminating WMD from the whole of the Middle East and formalizing that in verified treaties? We clearly need to address the underlying obstacles that hinder further progress on the establishment of the WMD-free zone in the Middle East, and this was the subject of a side event at the 2014 NPT PrepCom on May 7th, co-hosted by BASIC with PAX and the Israeli Disarmament Movement.

Egyptian Approaches on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-proliferation

On March 25th BASIC hosted a conference in collaboration with Cairo University and the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, in order to stimulate discussion about Egypt’s role and strategy in the regional and global non-proliferation regime over the next crucial period leading up to the 2015 NPT Review Conference and beyond, in the interests of effective impact on the disarmament debate.
